Joyce Ann Brown: Justice Denied
Published in Paperback by Noble Pr (November, 1990)
Authors: Joyce Ann Brown and Jay Gaines
Average review score:

This is why I don't believe in the death penalty
Imagine being in prison for something you know you didn't do, this is what happened to Joyce Brown. Joyce had witnesses, was at work the time the crime was committed, but was still found guilty for the murder of a store owner, who's wife pointed her out as being the guilty party. If this can happen to Joyce Brown it can happen to anyone. I think GOd for those gentlemen who came to her aid in the book. If you think there is now way that you could end up in prison, read this book, and you will see that you very well could even if you are innocent with lots of evidence.

Justice Denied by:Joyce Ann Brown & Jay Gaines
I must give a rating of 10 stars!!~ This book was so well written. It placed you in Ms.Browns shoes before, during & after. This author may you feel as though You were a apart of her awful journey through this ill-fated justice system of ours. Reading her story, (if you have any compassion) at all........It will indeed make you so damn Angry at these men in Suits (lawyers)& Robes (judges), that we so often call "Justice Seekers" in America. Too many times we read about 'innocent' people, being thrown into prison, & finding out Years Later that a BIG Mistake had be made. How do OUR System compensate these individuals? With an out-landish simple Apology??? How can anyone 'accept' what has happened to them? It's time to wake up America! It's time for these Paid, & Court appointed Attorney's to represent each & every case with every piece of skill they possilbly can, to make Damn Sure about "WHO" they are really sending to the depths of Hell!

All the facts in Ms. Brown's case were right before their eyes, yet Justice did not prevail. I searched high & low for a copy of this book for my very own, after asking a co-worker if I could read hers. Locating a copy in good condition was a feat, because it was no longer in print. Finally I located one & it had Joyce's autograph, I treasure it today still as a Great Read.

I cried many tears, I walked every inch of this sentence with Ms. Brown. Through all of what she indured, she still remained Strong in the Lord, (this was her Only Hope), as for as I could see. I say now: If the judge who sentenced this young lady is still practicing law, holding his gavel, & wearing that black robe, he should be made to do the Years that Ms. Brown served!

Even it was so done, It still would Not serve Ms. Brown any satisfaction, nor her family members for ripping their lives apart. The Most heart breaking part of this book, that wrenched my soul was when her child was shot/hurt, later died, & Ms.Brown was not granted the opportunity to go attend the funeral services! I fell into pieces after reading it.

Becoming a grandmother & not being able to have that daily/weekly interactions with her grandkid, or to have any great memories of her grandchild's was also a traumatic issue for Ms. Brown. This book will indeed touch your soul~

I'd love to meet Ms. Brown & J.Gaines, so we can share notes on what the 'System' did to my family, on the (4th of July) "What an Independence Day that was"! Good Luck Joyce on your upcoming Movie, & May God Always Be On Your Side. I know of a star who will portray your role Very Well, & Capture Every Emotion, her name is: Kimberly Elise, her role was Tee-Tee, from 'Set it Off'..........she looks like you somewhat, & I do believe she will carry your story to THE TOP of the Movie Charts!

Thanks For Never Giving Up Hope Joyce. What You & Jay wrote in your book, it Speaks for a large number of Americans. I know that you & Jay are friends for life now, & rightfully so. Everyone deserves a friend like Jay, his love says it all, it's (unconditional)~ Again, Good Luck On Your Upcoming Movie, Let me hear from you soon Sista~ 2 Sista~

An Excellent Book......
From the moment I opened this book I could not put it down. I started it one afternoon and was up most of the night because I could not quit reading. I wanted to see what happen in the next chapter. I laughed, I cried, my heart ached as I lived along with Miss Brown as she suffered and fought against the unfair justice system we now have.
I cried when I read where they would not release her even after it was proven that she was innocence.
Since reading the book I have had the opportunity to meet Miss Brown in person in the home of my niece who now work on her Board of Directors. I could only sit and stare at her. She is warm and friendly and looking at her you would never believe that she endured such a hard time in her life. I wanted to ask so many questions....but I did not want to dampen that beautiful spirit that shown so brightly before my eyes.
Her story is being made into a movie and I hope everyone will watch it and tell evreryone they know to watch it. It will be on Life Time. Justice Denied coming up soon.

One Weak to Freedom

Shows the way
If we would be honest enough to look at ourselves, we may understand why people react to us as they do. Why some like us and others don't. But most important - we will stop blaming the world for our actions and reactions. It isn't easy; but this book will show you the way. It is written as a story and the thread of self-awareness grips the reader into recognition of self. What a better place this world would be if everybody accepted that we can be One Weak to Freedom. Dalia Larden

My Life
This book "ONE WEAK TO FREEDOM" helped me ask questions of myself when I was very confused, and needed help. "Why was my life LIKE this?" "How did I get into this mess?" "Why was this happening to me?" "Who is responsible for my happiness? When am I going to be happy?" "Why am I not happy now?" "What made me like this?" 1981. At first reading "ONE WEAK TO FREEDOM" showed me that I was CAPABLE of learning. I opened my mind to new ideas, which allowed my old attitudes to change. New attitutes allowed more new changes. Once the process began there was no stopping it. The "TRUTH" was coming out and showing me that each new change was helping me become the person I always wanted to be. I just wanted to be happy. The happy feeling inside is indescibable. I have read this book again and again, as each new attitude change, the book seemed to change for me. I am aware of several people who have read this book and changed their lifestyles profoundly. Each of us has our own idea of what our lives should be like, and each of us is searching for the answer. I found there are new answers as our attitudes change, when we ask ourselves new questions. I will continue to use this book forever as my BIBLE of LIFE.

Publisher - Reader
Thsi book has been used in group discussions where people are having to deal with such problems as anxiety, anger, depression, alcoholism and low self-esteem. The ending of this book "One Weak to Freedom", deals with self-realization, positive action and understanding on the road to recovery. Freedom.

Quantitative Business Valuation: A Mathematical Approach for Today's Professionals
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Trade (16 November, 2000)
Author: Jay B. Abrams
Average review score:

Great Contribution
Abrams adds an important element of rigor that is sorely lacking among most valuation professionals.

Excellent, New Approach
This text is an excellent addition to the business valuation literature. The author explores a wide variety of approaches with new methods that are easy to follow. A tremendous amount of work went into the preparation of this book and it is very well written. There is a chapter on startup companies that is especially interesting to me.

If you are at all interested in the income method for valuing businesses, I would strongly encourage you to buy this book. In a review on the back cover of the text, Shannon Pratt strongly recommends the book because the author presents "a scholarly summary of past research, new empirical research of his own, and his conclusions".

My only criticism and surprise is the lack of use of Monte Carlo simulation in these models, which is surprising to me considering how statistically focused the author is and how easy simulation is to learn and employ. Also, the use of real options for valuing startups is extremely important but the author does acknowledge this subject is beyond the scope of his book. Extremely well done and the author should be proud of producing work of this caliber. I'm looking forward to future editions and other books by Jay B. Abrams.

This is Eye-opener
As a Finance MBA, this book is recommended. Why? First of all, this is a practical book that would show us how to assess and forecast the business and cash flow. Furthermore, step-by-step approach is helpful in understanding valuation of privately held firms.

So You Want to Play in the NHL : A Guide for Young Players
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (01 September, 2000)
Authors: Dan Bylsma and Jay M. Bylsma
Average review score:

Great Read
I actually bought this book from the Dan Bylsma WEB site. THe book was sent autographed to my son for this past Christmas. Most of the content is directed toward kids interested in playing hockey and who have questions from how do I do a certain drill to what if my parents are embarrasing me. My 8 year old enjoyed the book very much and continues to read it again and again. I still pick it up as well. If you haven't read the first book "So Your Son Want's to Play in the NHL", another great read.

Hockey With A Purpose
After receiving the book, I read it throughout the day as opportunity presented itself. I hated to put it down when I had other stuff to do. I felt like I was being forced to leave the game before it was over. I was enchanted by the book as if I'd never read it before, thrilled to play a role by helping with it and to be mentioned in this wonderful contribution to amateur hockey. As I read it, I thought about my roles as a father of a young player, as a coach, and as a coaching educator for USA Hockey. Two overwhelming thoughts came to mind as I read the printed version of the book. The truth conveyed by the material and the fact that at times I fall short of the goals conveyed by that truth from a child's perspective. Even though I speak or write about and teach many of these things quite often, I found myself addressing my mistakes in each of my roles as I read the book. But, even as I found myself addressing my mistakes, I was simultaneously using the ideas in the book to reaffirm many of my beliefs or to assimilate these ideas to address issues from a different perspective. And as stated in the book, perseverance is a key to success. Taking responsibility is a key to success. Learning from mistakes or failure is what truly makes you better. "So You Want To Play In The NHL" has given me additional impetus in my goal to constantly strive to improve as a father, a coach and a coaching educator. Thank you for taking the time to inspire even us older hockey guys with a book written for kids, because really, we are all still kids at heart! By addressing the issues from a kid's perspective for kids, I believe you have succeeded in reaching adults as well. The heart of this old kid is much better as a result of the time and effort you have taken to share your thoughts with the hockey world. This new book, "So You Want To Play In The NHL", for kids, and the existing book for adults, "So Your Son Wants To Play In The NHL", set the standards by which all of us in the sporting world should continually strive to achieve. Cordially, Terry Vayda USA Hockey Associate Coach-In-Chief (Southeast District--Florida)

required reading
As a coach and someone who knows the personal dedication it takes to achieve life's goals, this book confirms everything I have done in my life and teach to the players on my team. This book is more than a book about hockey. It spells out a recipe for success in life, in and out of hockey(or any team sport for that matter). Every page has something that will inspire you and remind you what is important in life. I am making this book required reading for my team because it confirms everything I have ever said in the locker room and to parents. While this is one man's journey through life to the NHL, the story is one shared by most people in the struggle to define who they are as the grow up and to achieve the goals that they want.

The Wall: A Parable
Published in Paperback by Word Publishing (September, 1977)
Author: Gloria Jay Evans
Average review score:

A must read!
As a therapist, I have recommended this book to hundreds of people over the last 10 years. I usually order several at once and give them as gifts. No bookshelf should be without this one. Evan's work is a wonderful example of healing from trauma and finding healthy ways to tear the wall down in order to heal.

life changing
I bought this book for me many years ago. I loved it. My teen aged son also picked it up and read it. I did not realize what an impact it had on him at the time. He later took over "ownership" of the book. Then it was lost in moving. He still talked about the different stones and what they mean. It made a difference in the life of a teenager. You can't do much better than that....it is life changing.

A Life-Changing Read
I found this wonderful paperback in a little used bookstore about five years ago. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I read the entire book right there and found that I had tears in my eyes as I was reading. I have read it many times since that day. The simplicity and the power are so evident that you immediately think about your own walls. We all have them. I know I did for sure. I knew that day at the bookstore that this humble book had changed my life and I find myself thinking about what I had read and I know that I am a much more tolerant person because of it. Thank You Gloria Jay Evans!

James Dean: Little Boy Lost
Published in Paperback by Warner Books (January, 1994)
Authors: Joe Hyams and Jay Hyams
Average review score:

It will touch your heart~*
Joe Hyams did a wonderful job writing this book. Although he was close to James Dean, he tried to tell the WHOLE story; bad and good. He tells of Jimmy growing up, struggling to make it in Hollywood, his obsession with fast cars, his love affairs (including Jimmy's true love, Pier Angeli), the real truth about his bisexuality, his mixed feelings about death, his dreams, his aspirations...anything you can think of. Many people were interviewed for this book ~ and what makes it different is he shares rare stories of his times w/ Jimmy also. A wonderful book, for the ultimate James Dean fan...or just someone who is curious about him. The author shares w/ you some of Jimmy's things that were found in his appartment after his tragic death, including poems and personal letters, also things found in his personal scrapbooks... You might even shed a tear toward the end of the book as his last hours, as well as the details of the horrific traffic accident which took his life, are told...I almost cried as I finished the book - not because James Dean died so young, but because a influential talent and icon was taken from the world. A beautiful book recommended to all. A+

Excellent!!
This is one of the best books that I have read about James Dean. The author did a wonderful job exploring all aspects of Jimmy's life. He showed the good and bad about Jimmy and talked about him on such a personal level and about his own experiences with Jimmy. I could barely put it down. He covered almost everything there is to know about Jimmy from his childhood to his well-known movies and personal relationships. He also interviewed many people who knew Jimmy closely. It's truly an excellent book!

Rapture! Bravo!
What a fantastic book. I just can't say it any better. I had to order this through an out-of-print book seller('The Book Nook', a wonderful company!), and that just added to the fun of reading it. This book has no bad points, whatsoever! I wish it was longer. Joe Hyams writing style is eloquent yet simple enough to bring out Jimmy's true nature. This is the most recent, in a string of 8 Dean biographies I've read, and it's such a necessity to any collection. To slightly contradict myself-my problem was only that it wasn't longer. Not a short read at all, the book was just so easy that it left you wanting to hear more about Jimmy from Mr. Hyams' perspective. It's the most objective standpoint anyone's taken on Jimmy, while still having a theme(angle)to write from. It's hard for me to find a bad Dean bio, simply because of my adoration of the young prodigy, but I can easily spot the great ones! Pick this book up. My used copy was in better shape than many new books I find at large bookstores. Again I must express my thanks to The Book Nook for making it possible for me to own this book, which I will utterly treasure. They work with amazon, so check them out.

The Mentor: A Memoir of Friendship and Gay Identity
Published in Paperback by Haworth (T) (March, 2000)
Authors: Jay Quinn and Nicholas Weinstock
Average review score:

Jay Quinn 101: THE SEED!!
The important point to be made about this book is that it is the first published work of Jay Quinn. I recommend that readers start with Quinn's mature, METES AND BONDS --the Lambda award winning novel-- and REBEL YELL anthology series, and then return to this first published work. Being the big fan, as I am, of Jay Quinn's books, I'm not overcritical when I say that this book is not quite "ripe"!! I just feel that most people will appreciate it more after they read the more finished books first. That way, you will better appreciate the dominating themes of his body of work. Why are Jay Quinn's books so important? Because Jay Quinn is not afraid to break taboos. That is #1. In the Lambda Book Report he talks openly about the roles of alcohol and in METES AND BOUNDS he writes about drugs affecting the lives of gay men. From Man-Boy love, to incest relations, he writes the truth. Jay Quinn is the most important new Southern writer today.

An Enjoyable Read!
How great it would be if all young gay men just coming out could have an older person, a Mentor, help guide them through life's trials and experiences. It certainly would have helped me. Jay Quinn's personal narrative is such a honest, no holes-barred read, and so interesting. It must have been hard to put all this down for everyone to see. Through all his troubles with relationships, drugs, and depression, he manages to pull through. All with the help of his dedicated mentor, Joe Riddick.

By reading this book other gay men will relive their own similar experiences, and know that they are not alone. We are all here to experience what life has to offer us, and it would be great if the different generations could help guide each other. We should all be "Mentors." I highly recommend this book.

Smart, sexy, and Southern
The process of acknowledging and accepting one's gay identity has never been easy-at any time, in any place-but it is frequently more difficult in the South, with its entrenched conservative familial, religious, and social strictures. THE MENTOR traces the path of one man, part-time surfer, part-time construction worker, full-time Southerner, as he recognizes, embraces, and ultimately balances the imperatives of his burgeoning gay identity with the values and demands of his Baptist upbringing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It's a difficult journey, marked by false starts, dead ends, and disappointments, but ultimately illuminated by the joy of self-discovery and self-acceptance.The word mentor originates in the story of Odysseus, whose son, Telemachus, was counseled by an old family friend, Mentor, during his father's absence. Throughout his personal emotional/sexual odyssey, author Jay Quinn finds wisdom and comfort in his relationship with an older gay man, Joe Riddick. He also takes solace from an extended gay family, a common occurrence in gay life, when gay friends replace the blood kin who have rejected gay offspring or siblings. These concepts-an established gay man helping a younger one adjust to a sometimes troublesome sexual identity, a family of choice replacing a family of birth-are not unusual in the gay world. What makes Quinn's narrative remarkable is his willingness to reveal himself completely-to strip away the comfortable patina of political correctness to reveal his raw emotions, ravenous needs, and sometimes disquieting choices-while detailing his pursuit of the things most "straight" people take for granted: love, acceptance, affirmation. For me, the pivotal scene in the book takes place in the chapter "Hunters and Gatherers," when Quinn, now somewhat older and wiser, rejects the advances of a man in the parking lot of an all-night grocery store. He is obviously attracted to the man who sees him purely as sexual quarry-that much is clear by his description-but he has been down that road many times before and sees and understands it for what it frequently is: an erotic bonanza but an emotional dead end. And in that moment, he (and the reader) understands, viscerally and well as cerebrally, what it means to be a man, not a gay man, but a MAN, a human, a person of depth, character, complexity, and responsibility. That is Jay Quinn's personal homecoming, and it is one that many gay men will identify with and many more will yearn for. Quinn's writing is smart and sexy, earthy and erudite. He offers a window into his soul-and, if we are wise enough to see it, a mirror into our own.

TAKE IT EVERYWHERE
I am an Internal Medicine Resident and can't live without it. It's complete. It has included references for further reading. Handy (pocket size) and pratical. Find the info you need in a hurry, very fast. I work with renal patients, and the included dosage adjustmen table covers the most frequently used antibs. I buy a new one every year since 1993!!!

Use it every day in my outpatient clinic
I don't even think about prescribing antibiotics without referring to sanford's. It's cheap, well organized, current, and easy to carry around. One of the 2 or 3 most used tools I have in my practice.

Top Reference
I have kept a copy of sanford in my cast pocket since internship. It is the quickest most concise reference when I need to know what antibiotic to use emperically. I recommend this to all practicing physicians.

Take the bully has helped my child tremendously
My child has come under attack from other children at her school, and becoming aware of this book and listening to the advice offered was the best help we could of hoped for.Her self esteem has been boosted and she is now aware that it is not her that is the problem but rather the other children who have the real problems.I would like to personally thank Kathy Noll and Dr. Carter for caring enough to put together this much needed information. For us it has been a godsend! Thank you so much

Excellent *****
I felt this book captured a piece of society that has been grossly overlooked! Kathy desreves two thumbs up for her excellent effort to help those faced with these problems. She has given guidiance counslers a very powerful tool in empowering children of all ages to find the strength and know how in relating to bullies of all kinds, big and small, friend or foe. I highly recommend this book to anyone whose ever been, ever has, or someday may be bullied.

A very informative and educational vehicle for kids & teens.
Kathy has written a very informative and educational vehicle for elementary age and middle school children, in terms that they can easily understand! She has handled the subject of bullying quite well, especially since she has had first hand experience with it. She is a truly gifted writer, and I am proud to admit that she is my niece. Good work, Kathy. It's a go!!
